TITLE Socio-Economic Transformation and Environmental Challenges in Ayodhya’s Religious Tourism Boom
ABSTRACT This paper analyses the socio-economic and environmental consequences of the rapid expansion of religious tourism in Ayodhya following major developments and investments in the city. Using reported visitor data (2022–2024), government budget allocations, and a transparent set of assumptions, the study: (1) estimates direct tourism spending and indirect impacts using a tourism multiplier approach; (2) disaggregates spending into sectorial shares and estimates employment generation; (3) examines social consequences such as livelihoods, urban changes, and communal dynamics; and (4) analyses environmental pressures including waste, water demand, and river pollution, and examines mitigation measures and policy options. Results indicate sizable short-term economic benefits (large visitor inflows, substantial spending, and notable job creation) accompanied by important challenges in urban management, ecological stress on the Saryu riverfront, and social transformation. The paper concludes with policy recommendations to ensure economic benefits are inclusive and environmental costs controlled through integrated planning.
