Since their discovery in the early 1900s, antibiotics have transformed medicine and saved countless
lives. However, the worrying increase in antibiotic resistance has eclipsed the history of antibiotics. The unrelenting
adaptability of microbes, which is fueled by antibiotic abuse and overuse, is the cause of this global issue. The history
of antibiotics and the following rise of antibiotic resistance are examined in this article. It may not help prevent surgical
site infections, according to other researchers. Even with the use of antibiotics, some experts contend that the disruption
of deeper tissues and local mucosal defenses during an intraoral surgical procedure may increase the risk of infection. It
highlights the growing problem of antibiotic abuse and overprescription, especially in low- and middle-income nations
where inappropriate antibiotic usage is a common occurrence worldwide. One of the most significant issues
confronting the scientific and medical communities is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The WHO warns that this
expanding problem might render once-effective antibiotics outdated and provide a serious public health concern. AMR
is one of the biggest threats to global public health and development, with estimates showing that it was directly or
indirectly responsible for millions of fatalities. |
