TITLE A Study on Adoption of UPI by Street Vendors in Hubballi
ABSTRACT India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has rapidly transformed retail payments by providing instant, low-cost, and interoperable digital transactions, offering particular promise for cash-dependent sectors such as street vending. This study examines the awareness, access, understanding, and adoption of UPI and mobile wallets among street vendors and small business owners. Findings reveal universal awareness, broad smartphone and bank-account access, and a basic understanding of UPI, yet actual business adoption remains limited to 43.5%. Key barriers include customer preference for cash, trust concerns, and perceived operational complexity, while convenience and faster transactions drive adoption among users. Notably, respondents reported no interest in further training, indicating that challenges stem from value perception and trust rather than knowledge deficits. The study highlights the need for targeted strategies that build confidence, emphasize tangible business benefits, and encourage customer uptake to strengthen digital payment adoption in the informal sector.
